Journey through time since WPS:
- Guna went to Penang Free School after WPS and stayed there until Form Five. In early 1972, he spent four “very tough” months at the Dusun Tua Youth Training Centre in Ulu Langat.
- Soon, however, opportunity knocked and he began training at the Chemical Company of Malaysia (CCM) in Padang Jawa. This opened doors for him to a job at the Esso Refinery, Port Dickson, as a technician in mid-1972. In 1976, he quit Esso to join Mobil as Terminal Operator in Lumut.
- In 1983, he moved from operations to sales and then into a management position. During this period, he got married, bought a house in Ipoh and had three children — two girls and a boy. It was also during these years that he obtained his off campus Diploma in Business Administration from University of London.
- Another break came his way in 1997, when he got his first overseas posting to Bangladesh. There, he had the rare opportunity to launch a brand from scratch. He was subsequently promoted to Marketing VP and Managing Director.
- In 2000, he was moved to Dubai to take charge of marketing for the Middle East. Finally, before retiring, he was General Manager of the company’s affiliate in the United Arab Emirates.
- He retired in 2013 and returned to Malaysia after being away for 16 years. His children have graduated and are working abroad — one in Germany, and the other two in Dubai.
